Andras Simonyi Discussion
András Simonyi is a former diplomat who served as Hungarian Ambassador to the United States (2002-2007). An economist by training, he has a PhD in international affairs and is currently an independent consultant and a scholar. He has had a lifelong love for rock and roll and plays guitar in his U.S. band, the Coalition of the Willing, which includes Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. He will talk about the huge impact of Rock and Roll and American pop culture in general in Soviet dominated Eastern Europe, about his personal journey, and about why rock music was so instrumental in breaking the monopoly of a suppressive ideology.
This event is free with RSVP online.
From renowned diplomat and musician András Simonyi — whom Stephen Colbert calls “the only ambassador I know who can shred a mean guitar!” — comes a timely and revealing memoir about growing up behind the Iron Curtain and longing for freedom while chasing the great power of rock and roll.
