Kirtan with Jim Gelcer and Samuel Salsbury
Jim Gelcer, an internationally acclaimed musician, and Northeast Ohio’s own Samuel Salsbury will be performing kirtan together on:
Friday, Sept 27th at 7 pm
The Studio Cleveland – 1395 W 10th St, Unit 120, Cleveland.
Samuel first met Jim at BhakiFest in Joshua Tree, CA where they played together on the Hanuman Stage and for various yoga classes in beautiful collaboration!
Jim Gelcer, of Toronto, infuses new life and spirit into the ancient heartfelt chants that influence today’s Kirtan movement. With a voice filled with depth and emotion, and impeccable musicianship, he tastefully blends the celebratory essence of Kirtan with the West. Jim’s debut recording “Bhagavan” was hailed as one of the year’s best by American radio shows In The Spirit and Full Lotus Kirtan. Yoga Chicago magazine called him “the perfect bhakti singer”.
Jim artfully combines traditional kirtan with modern influences like jazz and world music into a unique blend unlike anything else you’ve heard. At a live kirtan with Jim you may hear mashups of mantras with just about anything from Leonard Cohen to Bob Marley, Bill Withers, or even Black Eyed Peas.
Samuel Salsbury is a well-known NEOhio musician, a versatile violinist, improviser, and recording artist. He is also one of the few non-Indians to play the sarangi, a bowed instrument from India, whose rich and resonant tone is known for penetrating deep into the hearts of listeners. Salsbury brings soulful depth to a wide assortment of musical styles and situations. Probably best known for his kirtan performances, he has played with many of the world’s leading kirtan artists in the creation of sacred chants rooted in Hinduism and yoga practice. His spiritual journey dates back to early childhood and has taken him to such countries as Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Japan and, most recently, India.
