Have you ever gone to the beach and noticed litter on the sand? Or have you ever participated in a volunteer stream clean up? If so, you know that trash - and especially plastic - is an unsightly environmental problem. Dr. Anne Jefferson, a Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Kent State University, will share the work that her team is doing to measure the amount and types of trash in Clevelands urban streams and beaches. They are finding everything from shopping carts to microplastics, with plastic bags, food containers, and wrappers being the most common items. She will also talk about how trash gets into our waterways, what effects it has, and what we can do to enjoy litter-free lakes and streams.
It will be a hybrid event with in-person participation in the renovated Rare Book Room and a virtual option also available.
Join us at 9:30 for coffee and conversation before the talk begins.
